SEIU has done a lot of good. Without SEIU I don't believe we would have ever seen unionized janitors or security guards in Texas. MSEA would never have reached out and formed Local 771 in Maine. MSEA has never focussed on anything beyond State Employees and the addition of SEIU brought new strength, new skills and new energy to Maine.
One of the issues under discussion in Maine is disaffiliation from SEIU, another is to simply study the SEIU and MSEA relationship. The hate and infighting between the two groups has reached epic proportions. So far it seems that most of the hate is coming from those who would label anyone who even wants to look at the issue as a traitor.
Should we hate someone who wants a discussion, should we condemn them and deny their right to have a diffiering opinion? Read the rest for a glimpse into California
Lets see how someone who was a long term steward through the glory days of wage gains and benefit increases in California looks at this. I know Ellen's work as a cartoonist and those who have been on this site have seen her cartoons used and sometime editied but until recently there could have been no stronger fighter for SEIU.
Ellen saw the good SEIU has done, now she thinks she sees a different side, an SEIU that takes away workers rights to negotiate a contract, an SEIU that does not provide services. The true story may lie at one extreme or another but like most arguments, is probably somewhere in the middle.
This post is from the NUHW web site. I will post the SEIU side again during the next post.
