A strong MSEA with a proud history.

Without taking sides there are arguments going on inside the SEIU family about what type of Union we are going to have, who should lead it, and who should control it.

I have been reading the documents that define the MSEA association with the SEIU and they are an eye opener. The members that started this MSEASEIU we have today were Mainers and did not look kindly on anyone that might some day try to tell us how to run our Union. They had a great amount of foresight and built in protections that put the lie to the claims that the MSEA is run by the SEIU and does not represent the members. Over the next few weeks I will publish pieces of this document and you will be surprised at all of the times the term "the SEIU gives up the right" or "agrees that the MSEA shall decide.....". We have a lot to thank those members of thirty years ago for, they put us on a strong and independent road.

A short sample for anyone that thinks we are just an arm of the SEIU.

Article V, Autonomy

The MSEA shall, at all times, continue and maintain full autonomy over all particulars in the conduct of its business including, but not limited to:

1. Dues and Budget. MSEA shall have authority to establish its own operating and investment budgets and dues structure without regard to the minimum dues provision of Article XIV, Section 6 of the SEIU Constitution, which section SEIU waives.

This might be dry stuff but you can thank all of the members that put this stuff together for the MSEA still having more independence than most locals nationally.


We have gained a lot with our association and we have learned a lot but we have never given up who we are. We are still the MSEA.
